Whining husband

I did not quite understand when we were dating that complaining can spoil my life in marriage. We are 12 years together now and I think I have exhausted all the ways to make my husband more positive. I told him today I am separating from him, but I love him, and he loves me! He said he wants to change. But how? What should he do? How can I help him? Can you recommend a good book?
