Very few of us take the time to ever ask these questions. We get so caught up in daily life and forget the things that we want to accomplish. It’s important that we do stop and think about it from time to time because if we don’t all those dreams just tend to slip away and end up just becoming regrets.
You can even put a miscellaneous category for those items like “a perfect fitting pair of shoes for running”.
Draw the Lines
Draw lines on your poster board to evenly separate it into the categories you chose in the previous step. It’s easiest if you make this an even number and 6 categories or less.
Start Thinking
Okay, now here’s the fun part. Dream big and think about all the dreams you have locked up inside of you. What do you really want to do with your life? What do you want for your home, your relationships, yourself?
Cut out pictures in magazines or use post-it notes to document everything. Add a few positive thoughts and inspirations as well. Have fun with this. Don’t limit yourself with any negative thoughts. This is for everything and anything positive.
Make It Positive
For example, in your health category, you put post your photograph with the words underneath, “I am pain-free”. This will cause you to focus on what you don’t want, the pain. It would be more beneficial to put, “I am healthy and full of energy”. A good test is to see how you feel when you read it or see it. Do you feel excited, full of energy, or happy? If you do, you’re on the right track, if you don’t feel positive about it, change it until you do.
Why Do You Want It?
Say you want a new job so you put new job up. If you don’t really think about why you want the new job and just want another job to get you out of your current job, you’ll probably get a new job but it will be just like you currently have. You won’t be any happier in your new job than you are now. Instead, try thinking what kind of job do you want? What would really make you happy? It doesn’t have to be specific as in “I am the top executive at Microsoft” . It can be as simple as “I have a job where I am creative and excited about my work”.
Put it in Present Tense and Really Feel It
Avoid putting something like “I want a new car”. Instead cut out a picture of the exact car you want. Imagine yourself driving that brand new red convertible. Visualize all the details from the leather seats to the chrome around the headlights. See yourself in it. Feel yourself with it. You’re driving down the highway in it. Savour how great it feels with this dream coming true. You must truly believe you already have it.
Every time you see your poster give thanks for what is on it’s way.
How It Works
Creating a visual poster of your dreams works for several reasons:
1. It makes you stop and think about what your dreams are.
2. When you see it every day, it will be a constant reminder of your dreams. A lot of times we get so caught up in day to day life we forget what it is we really want out of life.
3. Every time you see it, it should provide you with feelings of joy and encourage you to keep working on your dreams.
4. It keeps you focused on what’s really important.
5. The constant reminder will also ensure that you’re more open to possible opportunities when they occur. Also, if you allow others to see it, they may see, “I didn’t know you wanted to act. I work with a volunteer theatre company that is looking for people.” An opportunity will suddenly appear that you never knew was there.
Positive energy attracts positive energy. If you think positive thoughts you will attract positive events into your life.
A Visual Dream Poster is quick and fun to do. For less than a dollar, you owe it to yourself to give it a try.
